First, don't panic — you have options
Driving without comprehensive insurance is more common than you'd think, and it doesn't mean you're stuck. Whether the accident was your fault or someone else's changes what happens next — so the calm, methodical steps below matter.
1. Make sure everyone is safe
Check yourself and any passengers for injuries and call 000 if anyone is hurt. Move out of traffic if it's safe, switch on your hazard lights, and stay clear of moving vehicles.
2. Swap details — this matters even more when you're uninsured
Exchange names, phone numbers, addresses, registration numbers and (if they have it) insurance details with every driver involved. Get contact details for any witnesses too. If you weren't at fault, these details are what let you recover your repair costs later.
3. Photograph everything
Take wide shots of the whole scene and close-ups of the damage to every vehicle. Our photo guide shows the exact shots that help. Good photos protect you — especially if there's any dispute about who was at fault.
4. Work out who was at fault
This is the big one. In New South Wales, a compulsory third party (CTP) green slip is mandatory and covers injuries — but it does not cover vehicle damage. Comprehensive insurance is optional. So whether you pay for your own repairs depends largely on who caused the crash.
5. If you weren't at fault — you may not have to pay
If another driver caused the accident, you may be able to recover your repair costs directly from them or their insurer, even without your own comprehensive policy. Get an itemised repair quote, keep your evidence, and pursue the at-fault party. We can help by documenting the damage properly and giving you a clear, professional quote to support your claim.
6. If you were at fault — get an honest quote and fix what matters
If the accident was your fault, the repair is yours to sort — but it's rarely as scary as it first seems. A good repairer will give you an honest price and help you prioritise: fix what's needed for safety and roadworthiness now, and leave cosmetic work for later if money's tight.
7. Get a free, no-judgment quote
Whatever happened, your next step is the same: get a real quote. Send us a few photos and we'll come back within one business day with an honest price and your options — no pressure, no judgment. See No insurance? No problem for how we help.
